Action Shower Pan & Steam Shower ;
Thanks, Dave it was a pleasure to work with you. Also, you were quite creative in your tile selections and bathroom and steam shower design.
This steam shower project located in Denver, Colorado is a project in which Dave and Karen played a big part.
Beginning with the design and layout of the steam shower and bathroom.
The tile selections of the glass tile accent run vertically at the back wall of the steam shower and porcelain tile is the perfect tile to use when it comes to steam shower installation.
FAQs, - What tile do you recommend as a steam shower installer?
That's such a common question that I get. So I wanted to mention it here.
Your steam shower will be designed and built to hold the heat generated by the steam generator you select to install.
Therefore the tile to be installed must be able to hold the heat and not let it escape.
The steam shower and tile installation pictured on this page included a custom-built bench with porcelain tile on the face of the bench and Quartz for the top along with a glass tile accent.
Natural stone is not recommended for steam showers since it does not do well retaining heat.
However, it's not a crime to use natural stone such as Carrara Marble. There is more maintenance keeping it clean no matter how many times the marble tile is sealed.
The polish finish also loses its luster after some use making it necessary to refinish the marble at some point.
Also, know that some sheet tiles also do not do well for steam showers. Some glues used for mounting the tiles can melt and tiles can become dislodged and will need to be repaired.

Steam Shower Water Proof Installer
with Schluter/Kerdi
This steam shower is waterproofed using Schluter/Kerdi
waterproofing membrane. This membrane has proved to be the leader in the shower and bathroom industry.
One of the reasons this product works so well is it is thinner than most products on the market which is a tremendous help when several layers need to be installed at the edges and corners of this steam shower. It makes tile setting a breeze.
Other waterproofing materials I highly recommend:
Triton Board - Quote straight from the manufacturer:
Powerful. Natural. Moisture Resistance.
Triton Waterproof Backer Board is made with a revolutionary board comprised of naturally occurring magnesium oxide, a mineral innately resistant to moisture, mold, and mildew. Through a proprietary nano-technology process, the magnesium oxide has been optimized for ultimate performance down to the molecular level. Unlike green gypsum board, Triton Waterproof Backer Board will not fall apart in water. It won’t de-laminate, peel, rot, or swell. Triton Waterproof Backer Board achieves this superior moisture resistance without the toxic waterproofing chemicals.
Waterproofing Shower Walls and Ceiling
With the installation of the waterproofing, membrane care is taken to apply 4" Kerdi band along all inner seams before applying the sheet membrane to the walls and ceiling.
This step is critical for a secure vapor-proof watertight seal and is important in preventing moisture from migrating behind the wallboard causing damage to the structure.
This new construction steam shower is located in Denver. Dave the homeowner did the outstanding framing. He's retired now. Too bad.
The shower pan is poured cement with a Schluter shower drain and the shower bench is built with concrete blocks as the base.
All surfaces of this steam shower is waterproofed with Schluter/Kerdi membrane. The porcelain tile is set directly to the membrane.
Once the shower is waterproofed and tested the tile installation can begin. The porcelain tile is run vertically with a split joint. The glass tile is covered with adhesive plastic which is removed for grouting.
Glass tile is the focus point for this steam shower installation and is set in the middle of the wall from the top of the bench and stops at the shower ceiling.
It takes about 72 hours minimum for the cement poured shower pan to fully cure. Once the cinder blocks have cured a sheet of cement board is attached to the face of the shower bench. The top of the bench is cemented to finish height.
Once the cement pan is cured the waterproofing can be installed. All of the corners are sealed with 4" kerdi band for a maximum water seal.
The porcelain wall tile is set vertically from floor to ceiling and includes the ceiling.

Top 3 Steam Shower Tiles - What I recommend
The best-performing tiles that I have installed for the past 40 years for steam shower & tile installer projects are as follows:
#1 - Porcelain Tile: Super non-porous and holds heat. The finish will not fade.
#2 - Ceramic Tile: "Old Faithful" Before Porcelain was developed and widely popular ceramic was and still is the go-to tile for steam showers.
Both #1,2 tiles are easy maintenance** Variety of styles, very durable
#3 - Glass Tile: I love glass tile in a steam shower or on any tile project. There is some maintenance with glass tiles.
However, just a word of caution. Some glass tiles will not work in a steam shower.
Some mesh-backed glass tiles or glass tiles without backing do not hold up as well. Before you purchase your glass tile double-check with the manufacturer to make sure your glass tile is rated for steam showers.
