This shower conversion project benefitted from an adjoining closet that added 2 feet for the shower enlargement.

The shower door is removed and will not be used again. The shiplap will remain on the walls.

This shower is cramped and not well ventilated as mold throughout the shower is evident. But this design was standard years back.

The expansion of the shower benefitted from a bedroom closet that was eliminated. The bedroom had 2 closets. We also opened the shower entrance and cut the wall behind the toilet in half.

We install Triton board that is already waterproofed from the factory. All surfaces need to be waterproofed and vapor proofed.

The tile installation always begins with the walls and ceiling. This gives the cement poured shower pan time to fully cure.

We tile the recessed shampoo niches with penny tile on the back walls and wrap the shelves with the wall tile and trim it out with metal edging.

We break out the old cement to get to the sub-floor and to remove the shower curb which was extremely high for some reason. I say about 8". It was a chore stepping in and out of.

Looks like this was not the original shower which at one time was basically a 3'x3' square that had leaked substantially. The dark water marked square indicates the original shower size. The closet was to the left.

Even though we gain spaced for this space and 2 shower heads were installed there was still not a lot of room for a built in bench. We installed this wall mounted shower bench the homeowner purchased.

A view of the shower from the bedroom where we framed in a new bedroom wall and eliminated the closet.

With the drywall installed taped and painted you would never know that a closet door was there.
A Real-Life Denver Project Converting a Shower to Steam Shower in Denver, CO
In one notable Denver steam shower conversion, the homeowners collaborated closely with our team, choosing large-format porcelain tiles to enhance their space's modern aesthetic. The addition of built-in seating and premium fixtures transformed their master bath into a personal retreat, highlighting both functionality and luxury.
If you have ever lived in an older home you know that bathrooms were designed small, very small.
To update and add value and also practical design to their master bathroom this young couple decided to get rid of one of their two-bedroom closets to be able to expand their shower.
They not only wanted more room but they also wanted to incorporate the healthful benefits of a steam shower into their remodel project.
At the same time, they wanted to keep the existing tile flooring and shiplap that was already installed.
We enlarged their shower installation adding another 2 ft to the shower space and also cut the entrance wall in half. This adds to the feeling of space by opening up to the natural light feeling less confined.

If you're thinking about a steam shower installation project for your home, here are a few things you may want to consider:
Some reasons why a home steam shower will benefit you;
-
People are busy these days; finding time to take care of themselves and make healthy lifestyle choices can be difficult. We each have a different routine that we follow day by day involving family, work, business, and association. What time is left is precious.
-
Imagine you could recharge and rejuvenate in your own home's steam shower or steam room. It would be as convenient and easy as pressing a button. No driving, no hassles, no waiting or reserving steam sessions. Your well-being and happiness will be improved to move on to the next matter that will come up.
-
Other healthful therapies can also be integrated into modern steam shower sessions and be even more effective. Therapies such as aromatherapy, chromotherapy even music as therapy can be combined with your steam shower for the ultimate in stress relief. Relax and unwind after a hectic day of activities. Consistent home steam sessions will elevate, your energy levels, and your relaxed mood will return, just by using your home steam shower regularly.
-
Just imagine how much time we spend in the bathroom. For most of us, it's the first place we go to when we wake up and the last place we visit before we hit the sack. Not to mention the in-between time. Because of the changing lifestyles of the modern family, the bathroom has become the place where we can devout a little me-time into the equation. Adding a steam shower into today's bathroom remodeling project is not only healthy but adds substantially to the value of your home.
-
If you have ever felt the need for a time out from the overwhelmingly mundane task at hand, or stuck in a never-ending never-backdown mode that seems to be all around us? Regular steam sessions enhance other stress-relieving strategies, such as exercise, sleep, eating health-wise, and other habits that positively affect our important health issues. However, steam therapy is not only for you, but it also benefits other people in a meaningful way. How so? Who wants to be around a grouch? It's always nice to be around a person who deals with and treats others in a mild and patient manner. When we feel good physically our mental disposition will also benefit in a positive way.

Here's a look from the former closet entrance towards the shower valve wall

The closet areas to the left of this torn out shower pan. The shower was enlarged moving it forward some time in the past. Now we're making it wider.

The shower pan features a porcelain penny tile for the tile installation. Here also is a birds eye view of the folding shower seat used during steam sessions.

With the closet doors removed we frame in a wall that will be drywalled and painted in the bedroom and with another shower head and valves on the new shower wall.

This bench can be folded up when not in use so that 2 can enjoy a shower

Porcelain tile is installed horizontally in a brick pattern, with the same tile pattern set to the shower ceiling.

Good view of some of the framing involved with the recessed shampoo shelves and new framing for the half wall and shower entrance.

The tile installation is first layout so that there will be no little sliver cut tiles especially around the shamppo shelves.
CUSTOM STEAM SHOWER-TILE INSTALLATION
All of the setting materials for this steam shower tile installation project are the highest in quality. Mapei Ultralite Mortar Pro thin-set is very strong lightweight and easy to spread. It's very sticky and adheres to the walls and ceiling almost instantly when mixed according to the manufacturer's directions.
We also selected the Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA grout which is probably the best grout on the market today and an excellent grout for steam shower projects.
We apply the thin-set mortar with a 1/2"x1/2" notch trowel and make sure to spread a layer of thin-set to the surface being installed and we butter and or notch the back of the tile as we are tiling the shower.
All shower tile installation projects are waterproof so that there will be no water leaks or surprises down the road. With steam shower installation projects we go another step further in making sure that the shower is also vapor-proofed. This step is not included with most shower replacement tile installations which is why you cant simply drill a hole in the wall and hook up a steam generator.
